Sophie Wilcocks
Dental Therapist

In any dental surgery you’ll find a range of roles from dentists, dental nurses to dental hygienists. In many you’ll also find Dental Therapists, a role that many are unaware of. Sophie is our Dental Therapist here at Broad Street Dental and she is an integral part of our team, let’s find out what Sophie can do!

The role of a Dental Therapist

Dental therapists have had advanced training enabling them to carry out examinations on your teeth, gums and the soft tissue of your mouth; almost all standard dental procedures that dentists can, including:

Prevention

Prevention is a major focus for dental therapists, aligning with NHS England’s Health Initiatives. Their services include:

  • Dental health education and oral hygiene advice

  • Adult dental check ups

  • Applying fluoride varnish to prevent tooth decay

  • Placing fissure sealants on children’s teeth to protect against decay

  • Offering dietary advice and other information, such as how to give up smoking.

Restorative Treatments

Dental therapists are trained to carry out a variety of restorative procedures, helping reduce the workload for dentists and improving access to care. These treatments include:

  • Fillings in both permanent and baby teeth

  • Extracting baby teeth

  • Placing temporary fillings

Periodontal Treatments

Managing gum disease is a key part of a dental therapist’s role. They provide:

  • Deep cleaning treatments (Root Planing and Sub-Gingival Scaling)

  • Monitoring and maintenance of ongoing periodontal health

  • Educating patients how to maintain healthy gums to prevent further disease progression.

 Children’s Dentistry

Children’s oral health is a priority at Broad Street Dental Surgery, and dental therapists play a important role in managing care for young patients. Their services include:

  • Routine check-ups and restorative work for children

  • Sedation when necessary for anxious or young patients

  • Encouraging positive oral health habits from an early age

A Dental Therapist can then do further specialist training in areas including:

  • Direct Access

  • Carrying out tooth whitening to the prescription of a dentist

  • Administering inhalation sedation

  • Removing sutures after the wound has been checked by a dentist

Referrals

  • If the dental therapist finds any areas of concern or cannot provide treatment within their scope of practice, we have a system in place to refer you to a dentist for treatment. Only a dentist can fully diagnose some oral conditions and provide a comprehensive treatment plan. At the time of your appointment booking, our reception team will ask screening questions to check your suitability for direct access. However, if the therapist considers a referral to your dentist is necessary, please be advised there is an additional fee for the dentist’s review appointment.

  • If you are not already registered with Broad Street Dental Surgery and you are listed at another practice, we will ask your permission to contact them. We will enquire about the recommended frequency of your check-ups and the date of your last full oral health examination with a dentist.
